The American Society of Breast Surgeons is seeking volunteers for several task forces and committees. Terms and other details are listed below. Eligible members in good standing may apply by the deadline: May 28, 2024.

Fellows Oncoplastics Education Task Force

This Task Force will explore opportunities to offer education early in fellowship, providing consistency in training and expose fellows to Oncoplastics such as in-person/live virtual opportunities that will be part of the Breast Fellows University program.

  • Expertise: Experience in training fellows, Graduate Medical Education, and routinely performs oncoplastics procedures in practice.

Staff Liaison

Oncoplastic Certification Task Force

This Task Force will oversee the new Level I Oncoplastic Surgery certification, manage the initial application review process and recommend adjustments as needed, setting the stage for a more enduring certification review process and structure.

  • Expertise: Experience in serving as a certification or accreditation reviewer is a plus. Must be willing and/or able to apply for and achieve ASBrS Level 1 Oncoplastic Certification.

Staff Liaison

Oncoplastics Online Education Task Force

This Task Force will develop modules of online material to include didactics, case presentations, and procedural videos that are available on-demand with CME. These modules may be used to expose members to oncoplastics as well as fulfill certification educational requirements.

Online Video Library Committee (OVL)

The charge of the Online Video Library Committee is to develop a catalogue of basic, intermediate, and advanced breast surgical procedures for use by members seeking to improve their technical understanding of breast surgical oncology.

  • Expertise: The Online Video Library Committee is looking for a surgeon with an interest and experience in creating educational medical videos.

Question of the Week Committee (QOTW)

The charge of the Question of the Week (QOTW) Committee is to develop self-assessment opportunities for members to test their knowledge and determine gaps in their understanding of the quickly changing world of breast disease. Committee members are responsible for developing, reviewing, and approving activities of the QOTW program.

Requirements

  • Member Categories: Active or Candidate
  • Practice Backgrounds: All practice backgrounds are eligible.
  • Expertise: Experience with drafting SESAP or BESAP-style questions is desirable, although not required. In addition, those with expertise in potential topics such as oncoplastic surgery, genetics, ethics, or coding/billing would be desirable, but not required.

Program Details

The QOTW program was created to be quick, fun, and easily accessible for breast surgeons to improve their competency in key areas they face in their practice. Available as a free-of-charge member benefit, members access a bi-weekly breast-related case, complete two follow-up questions, and review the ‘take-home points' along with supporting references. Upon completing questions, participants will be able to see how other members answered, view how many credits they have earned, and can print their CME transcript at any time. The program also fulfills the American Board of Surgery's Continuous Certification program.

Members of the QOTW Committee are expected to write 3 Activities (2-part question) per year, as well as edit other members' Activities.

About the Call for Volunteers

  • Committees with vacancies to fill are announced through our annual “Call for Volunteers” in the fall. If opportunities become available at other times throughout the year, members will be notified at that time. Applications will only be accepted during our volunteer enrollment periods.
  • The “Call for Volunteers” announcement will include application information and outline the specific skills/expertise the committee is looking for, meeting attendance requirements, etc.
  • Interested volunteers may access the complete list of committees available on our website.
  • All applicants must be a member in good standing.

Terms

  • Most committee members serve from April to April. The dates correspond with the ASBrS Annual Meeting. Working group terms and special project group terms may vary.
  • Members serve for a term of two years and can serve up to three two-year terms. Chairs serve for a term of two years and can serve up to two two-year terms.
  • All members may sit on committees, but only Active Members may vote or hold office. Patient Advocate members may sit on committees by invitation only from the committee chair.

Duties/Time Commitment

  • Committee duties will vary by committee. Volunteers are requested to commit to a few teleconferences per year and/or in person meetings as determined by the committee (dependent on committee projects, etc) and to actively participate as a committee member.
