Surgeons with a special interest in the treatment of breast disease.
Objectives:
At the end of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Understand the rare situations in which axillary lymph node dissection is still required
- Recognize when to utilize systemic therapy (endocrine, immunotherapy, targeted or chemotherapy) prior to surgery
- Improve ability to provide flat aesthetic closure following mastectomy or offer oncoplastic breast conservation when appropriate
- Determine which patients with atypical breast biopsy require a surgical excision
- Understand the indications for post mastectomy radiation therapy
- Manage idiopathic granulomatous mastitis and other benign breast processes
Description:
This 2-part course will offer the latest updates in the surgical management of patients with breast cancer and benign breast disease. Topics include management of the axilla (when to dissect, when not, when to perform sentinel lymph node surgery, when not), indications for neoadjuvant chemotherapy or endocrine therapy, indications for post mastectomy radiation, tips to optimize cosmetic outcome in breast surgery, as well as management of breast abscesses, granulomatous mastitis, and atypical biopsies. Our speakers will offer technical tips, most up to date clinical algorithms and case studies that general surgeons can incorporate immediately into their practice.
