Challenges and Considerations in Lactation for Breast Care Providers

Course Description:

This course will review aspects of lactation relevant to breast care providers and surgical practice. Topics include interventions in inflammatory conditions such as mastitis and abscess; nipple areolar complex pathology; benign masses during lactation; and, managing the intersection of breast cancer and breastfeeding.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe approaches to effectively managing inflammatory conditions in lactation, including mastitis, abscess, phlegmon, and galactocele
  • Present management strategies for the lactating patient undergoing breast surgery and anesthesia
  • Explore evolving management of IGM and challenges specific to lactation
  • Discuss the unique management of benign masses in lactation, as well as the management of breast cancer and breastfeeding
  • Review appropriate interventions for complications that affect the lactating nipple areolar complex, including trauma, subacute mastitis, blebs, and vasospasm
  • Review oncolactation, the intersection of breast
